My prayer was, ? need to stop drinking. I had just been born again and was eager to witness for Christ. One day, we, three brothers, happened to gather at the home of the eldest. He was much pleased and ordered a case of beer. ?et? drink! He said. ??l pour out and serve you. Then suddenly I proclaimed, ?rother, I decided to stop drinking from today! He urged on, ?ou have gone mad since you became a Christian. Some pastors drink and some church elders even sell liquor. But I simply said with boldness, ? don? want to drink. In impossible situations, the Holy Spirit can work wonders. I stayed away from liquor since that day.
I began praying for my family early in the morning. It was about three months since I began my early morning prayers. I noticed my second older brother sitting pensively in the dining room as I walked in for breakfast. I said, ?et? eat. He answered, ?njoong! Stop praying with tears, and I will go to church. He must have overheard my tearful prayers. This reminded me of Psalms 126. ?e who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. I am convinced that the Holy Spirit works through tearful prayers. I? not want to lose my chance here. ?epeat after me, I said, and read the prayer from the Four Spiritual Laws. He became a faithful church member since then. Yet he was forced to drink in social situations as a policeman. I prayed for him for three years. He quit being a policeman and found a different job. Yet, he still drank and even to the point of putting his life in danger. But since then, he has become a better Christian and now serves the church faithfully as an elder. Thus I experienced the power of prayer again through my second older brother.
One thing that worried me was ancestor worship on Thanksgiving day at the home of my oldest brother. I was adamant about my decision to worship God alone and not to bow down before any idols. I said, ?ldest brother, I cannot participate with the ancestor worship because I am a Christian. He tried to beat me shouting, ?ou are crazy! My elder sister came in between us and stopped the beating. I prayed more earnestly, ?od! Please save my poor family! with tears. Eventually the whole family members came to know the Lord, which is a miracle. God listened to my prayers.
In 1978, I was in my third year of seminary and my wife, baby girl, and I were sleeping in our rented basement room. The telephone rang in the middle of the night. It was my oldest brother. He said in a drunken voice, ?njoong! We won? have ancestor worship from now on; would you please lead us in a Christian service instead? ?f course! I replied joyfully, ? will be glad to. I hurried to his home the next day. My prayer was answered again.
My oldest brother and older sister also became Christians. I pray every day for nieces, nephews, and in-laws, naming them individually. I had been praying for my mother and father-in-law for 23 years. They never came to see us since our marriage. They had a financial crisis, were forced out of their house, and were nowhere to be found. We prayed to find them. Then one day, my father-in-law phoned us. We welcomed them and they stayed with us for three months. Eventually they became Christians. We never asked them to go to church but just prayed. He asked one day, ?ay we go to church with you? And later he also mentioned, ? never was more humiliated in my life to come to your house to stay, because I had no place to go. I believe that it was god? providence to save us. I would say that I struggled all my life running a business and dealing with people. I never experienced the kind of peace I felt at your home, even in this rented room. |
