How many of you know the names of two women in the genealogy of Jesus? One is Rahab and the other is the mother of Solomon. Who is Rahab? She is the mother of Boaz. But who is she really, besides being the mother of Boaz? The Bible has an answer for this question. Let¡¯s go to chapter two in the book of Joshua, which talks about Rahab.
Rahab was a prostitute. Prostitution is not an occupation that people desire to have today nor then. A prostitute is one of those who are despised in society. She was not an Israelite. she was not part of God¡¯s chosen people. She never heard about the God of Israel, until the Red Sea miracle and the wars of Israel with the Amorites spead to the world. In fact, she was one of those whom God commended Israel to destroy. But she not only survived in the attack of Jericho but also became a part of genealogy of Jesus. How was it possible?
According to the Bible, I believe it was only possible because she was a woman of courage, action and wisdom.
First of all, Rahab was a woman of courage. The king of Jericho sent his army to Rahab, knowing that there were two spies in Rahab¡¯s house. But she wasn¡¯t afraid of him. Most people would be very fearful and do whatever they were told to do. But she was different.
Secondly, she was a woman of action. She wasn¡¯t just being courageous. She acted upon her conviction. She hid the spies and lied to the king¡¯s army. She even helped the spies escape.
Thirdly, Rahab was a woman of wisdom. Rahab knew what would happen to them. Like many people in the city of Jericho, she heard about a people group that came out of Egypt and won the wars against the Amorites. She said, ¡°For the Lord, your God in God in heaven above and on the earth below. Now, then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you.¡± She knew exactly what she should do.
I believe we all can learn from her. Without Rahab¡¯s help, the Israelites would have had great difficulty in taking down Jericho. A woman of faith was the key of the success of the attack of Jericho. God has called all of us to be Rahab in our family, neighborhood, city and country. If we are obedient to our God, God will show us miracles. Let us become men and women of courage, action and wisdom for God and our people.
