옛날, 어떤 왕이 매일 여러 장식이 주렁주렁 달린 눈부신 의복을 입고 거울 앞에서 자신의 자랑스러운 모습을 보며 뽐냈습니다.
백성은 어떻게 살든지 왕은 자기만을 생각했습니다. 어느날 시종이 왕이 매일 들여다보던 거울을 치워버렸습니다. 다음날 왕이 자기의 모습을 보려고 거울을 찾았으나 거울은 보이지 않고, 거울이 있던 자리에 난 창문을 통하여 거리를 오가는 사람들을 볼 수 있었습니다.
거리를 오가는 사람들은 지치고 굶주린 모습이었습니다. 창백한 여인과 굶주린 아이를 보았고, 먹을 것을 찾으며 쓰레기통을 뒤지는 아이들과 허리가 구부러진 노인들도 볼 수 있었습니다. 그리하여 왕은 자기의 화려한 의복을 벗어버리고 평민들이 입는 소박한 옷으로 갈아입고 백성들 가운데로 나아가 그들의 소리에 귀를 기울여 그들의 아픔을 함께 나누었다고 합니다.
그리하면 이루리라
오늘날 많은 사람들은 오직 자기만을 바라보며 살고 있습니다. 사람이 오직 자신만을 바라보고 관심을 쏟고 있는 동안은 그 무엇도 볼 수 없고 어떤 소리도 들을 수 없습니다. 자신만을 사랑하고 자랑하는 욕심과 이기심으로 똘똘 뭉친 사람들의 눈에는 예수님이 보이지 않습니다. 예수님의 음성도 들리지 않습니다.
사람에게는 언제까지나 기회가 있는 것이 아닙니다. 당신도 자신만을 보느라 정신 없는 삶을 살고 있지는 않습니까? 자신만 보고 있을 때는 예수님도 이웃도 결코 볼 수 없음을 명심하십시오.
영국 케임브리지 대학 교수를 지낸 찰스 킹슬리는 아름다운 삶을 누린 사람이었습니다. 그 비결을 묻는 사람에게 이렇게 대답했다고 합니다.
“내게는 친구 한 분이 있었습니다. 그분은 다름 아닌 예수 그리스도였습니다.”
예수님을 만났던 사람들도 한결같이 이렇게 말합니다.
“예수님 그분을 제가 먼저 안 것이 아니라 예수님께서 저를 찾아 불러주셨습니다.”
사랑하는 여러분! 예수님께서는 분명 당신을 먼저 찾고 계심을 기억하십시오. “너희가 내 안에 거하고 내 말이 너희 안에 거하면 무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라 그리하면 이루리라” 예수님의 말씀입니다(요 15:7).
찰나의 인생
미국의 어떤 청년이 도로를 건너고 있었습니다. 갑자기 대형 트럭이 청년을 덮쳤으나 옆에 있던 신사가 재빨리 밀치는 바람에 목숨을 구했습니다.
너무나 놀라서 정신을 차리지 못한 청년은 신사에게 “고맙습니다.”라는 말 한마디만 남기고 군중 속으로 가버렸습니다. 이 모습을 본 사람들은 자신의 생명을 구해 준 은인에게 어떻게 그런 의례적인 말 한 마디로 끝낼 수 있느냐며 혀를 찼습니다.
이 일이 있은 후 그 도시에는 살인 혐의로 재판이 열렸습니다. 판사가 판결을 하기 직전에 죄인인 청년에게 마지막으로 할 말이 있으면 하라고 하였습니다.
그러자 청년이 입을 열었습니다.
“판사님, 저를 아시지요?”
“미안하지만 나는 자네를 기억할 수 없네.”라는 판사의 말 뒤에 뱉은 청년의 말 한 마디는 장내를 술렁거리게 만들기에 충분했습니다.
“판사님, 얼마 전 대형 트럭이 저를 덮쳤을 때 저를 구해 주시지 않으셨습니까? 오늘도 저를 좀 구해 주세요.”
모두들 긴장한 채 판사가 무슨 말을 할 것인지에 귀를 기울이고 있었습니다. 이윽고 판사가 입을 열었습니다.
“젊은이, 이제야 기억이 나는군! 그러나 그 날에는 내가 자네의 구세주였지만 오늘은 내가 자네의 심판주임을 명심하게!”
지금 이 시간 당신을 기다리는…
사람들은 예수님이 언제까지나 마음씨 좋은 구세주일 것이라고만 생각합니다. 그러나 어느 날 예수님은 심판주로서 우리에게 나타날 것입니다. 그때는 자신의 삶에 대해 책임을 져야 합니다. 사람들은 자신의 삶이 알려지지 않기를 바라며 살지만 예수님은 모든 인간의 삶을 명확하게 짚고 넘어가실 것입니다.
그러므로 중요한 것은 바로 ‘오늘’입니다. 오늘 우리가 어떻게 사는가가 관건이 됩니다. 오늘은 또 하나의 기회입니다.
하나님은 시간을 예약제로 우리에게 주신 것이 아니라 지금이라는 찰나만을 주셨음을 기억해야 합니다. 사람들은 너무나 내일을 신뢰합니다. 그래서 무슨 일이든 내일 하겠다고 말합니다. 인생이 아무리 즐거워도 미래는 신뢰하지 말아야 합니다. 살아있는 지금 우리는 행동해야 합니다. 지금이야말로 결정적으로 중요한 시기입니다. 하나님은 성경을 통해 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다.
“오늘날 너희가 그의 음성을 듣거든 노하심을 격동하여 광야에서 시험하던 때와 같이 너희 마음을 강퍅케 하지 말라”(히 3:7~8).
이 시간 예수님은 모든 사람들에게 간절히 부탁하고 있습니다.
“내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내 말을 듣고 또 나 보내신 이를 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고 심판에 이르지 아니하나니 사망에서 생명으로 옮겼느니라”(요 5:24).
예수님은 지금 이 시간 당신을 기다리고 있습니다.
Fragrant life
My Reflection in the Mirror

Once upon a time, there was a king who used to admire himself in the mirror, all decked out with colorful ornaments on flashy robe. He only thought of himself and nobody else. One of the servants put away the mirror in which the King would look himself. The King looked for the lost mirror in vain and by chance he found himself looking into the window and saw people passing by. The people looked tired and hungry. Pale women, hungry children, haggard old people searching for food in the garbage can were the sight he noticed for the first time. Right there and then he put away his gaudy attire and put on common clothes and he began to listen to the people's voices in the midst of people.
It Shall Be Done unto You
Nowadays people live for themselves. While you concentrate on yourself, you can't see nor hear anything. If you love yourself alone and you are filled with greed and selfishness, you cannot see Jesus nor hear him. You may not have another chance in the future. Are you living only for yourself? Be careful! You won't be able to see Jesus nor neighbors if you keep looking at yourself.
Professor, Charles Kingsley of Cambridge University in England had a wonderful life. The secret of his happiness was: he said, “I had a friend and he is Jesus Christ.” Everybody who met Jesus says: “Jesus had come to me before I ever sought him.” Remember, Jesus is seeking for you. “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, then you will ask for anything you wish, and you shall have it.”(John 15:7)
A Chance of a Lifetime
A Young man was walking on the road. When a big truck nearly ran over him, a gentleman pushed him away and saved his life. The young man simply said, “Thank you.” He was too shocked to think soberly, and disappeared into the crowds. People criticized him for being so flippant and ungrateful to a man who saved his life. There was a trial of a murder case.
When the judge asked the criminal to say the last word, the criminal opened his mouth and said, “Judge, you know me.” “I'm sorry but I don't remember you.” Then the words the criminal poured out of his mouth stirred up the crowd. “Judge! you saved my life when the truck nearly hit me; now won't you save me again this time?” Everyone was holding their breadth to hear what the judge would say. “Oh! young man, I remember you. I was a savior then, but today I am a judge.”
People take Jesus for granted, who is being benevolent indefinitely. Be ware, he will suddenly appear to us as a judge. You have to be prepared to be responsible for your life. People try to hide their private life but Jesus knows all the details. “Today” is important. Today is another chance for you. God does not guarantee your future, but he gives us this moment.
People put off everything till tomorrow. We cannot be sure if there will be another day. We have to act now while we are alive. Now is the decesion time. God said in the Bible: So then, as the Holy Spirit said, “If you hear God's voice today, do not be stubborn, as your ancestors were when they rebelled against God, as they were that day in the desert when they put him to the test.”(Hebrews 3:7~8)
Jesus is entreating you. “I am telling you the truth: whoever hears my words and believes in him who sent me has eternal life. He will not be judged, but has already passed from death to life.”(John 5:24) Jesus is waiting for you now.
