Leaders of the six nations who share the Mekong River have launched an initiative to protect and conserve the region's natural resources while also promoting sustainable development.
The initiative was announced today (Tuesday) at the end of the two-day Greater Mekong Subregion economic cooperative summit in Kunming, China.
The GMS grouping includes China, Laos, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Under the initiative, several important biodiversity areas in the subregion will be connected through a series of conservation corridors. The GMS nations will also focus on reducing poverty in the communities located in or near the corridors.
